The MTN facility in New Germany was developed as a regional cellular network switch centre, housing specialised telecommunications equipment during the early rollout of mobile networks in South Africa. Designed as an infrastructure-driven facility, it prioritised operational efficiency, environmental control, and the secure accommodation of sensitive transmission systems.

As staffing expanded and transmission facilities required upgrading, additional office space was needed within an already constrained technical building. The challenge was to introduce new workspaces without compromising the performance or integrity of the existing communications infrastructure.

The design added a lightweight office level above the original structure. Glazing was extended beyond the existing concrete upstand to create transparency and reduce visual mass, while an oversailing roof, supported by steel columns rising from ground level, reinforced the appearance of a floating office layer above the equipment hall. This clear distinction between technical and occupied spaces enabled future expansion while maintaining uninterrupted operations.

The completed facility provides a flexible, expandable telecommunications hub that successfully integrates advanced technical infrastructure with evolving administrative requirements within a robust industrial framework.
